Campus update

Happy New Year and a warm welcome back to Horizon Campus

Our students rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work. Packham and Fury classes have been exploring the following big question as part of their PSHE lessons: What is democracy and the UK voting system?

To answer this question they have been learning about Parliament, their rights and responsibilities as a UK citizen, the House of Lords, the House of Commons and the monarchy.  They’ve even run their own election campaigns as they’ve been learning about political parties, and local and national elections.

Their manifestos were impressive and focused on improvements to our campus should they be elected!  Some of the great ideas that won the votes of their peers included lockers for every learner, friendship clubs and lunch buddies.  We were impressed by their campaign speeches and the political party names which included Progress Party and Fury Party.

In addition, Packham class recently visited Westminster where they had a guided tour of the House of Lords. Their tour guide explained the work of the UK Parliament and its relevance today, outlined how the working spaces are used, suggested ways they can engage in the democratic process and highlighted some of the dramatic history of the Palace of Westminster.  The tour was particularly informative for our Year 12 learners who are approaching voting age.

Fury class will (literally) be following in their footsteps as they will be visiting the House of Lords in February.

We wish our interns all the best as they embark on their employment journey through the supported internship programme.
