Campus update

Have you ever wondered what happens in our math lessons?

Students are all working at their own pace, whether that's toward a functional skills qualification, or a GCSE.

Our maths team work hard to create lessons that help students to learn in a way that is fun and practical. The use of manipulatives is important in maths. Manipulatives are objects that help students to learn maths concepts.

Packham class have been using counters to learn about subtraction. Working in pairs, they were able to complete a task about 'more or less.'

They had to work out how many counters they had, and how many their friend had. They recorded their answers and then considered who had more, and who had less counters.

In Kelly class, students have been working on multiplication using arrays. They used counters to make different arrays by changing the number of rows and columns. They were then able to write multiplication sums for their arrays.

GCSE students in Adams class have used both counters and money as part of their work on ratios. They solved word problems using these resources.

You can support your child’s learning at home too. Here are some ideas:

  • Food preparation. Weighing ingredients and setting the table with the correct number of plates and cutlery.
  • Games including dice. (This helps with counting!)
  • Festive fun- how many houses can they spot with twinkly lights whilst out and about?

Incorporating maths into every day life helps students to learn in a fun and meaningful way.
