A Celebration of Black History
This week we’ve been celebrating Black History Month. To mark the occasion, we held a special assembly focusing on inspirational figures of Black heritage and culture.
The Horizon team shared stories about key people from history. Ms Christelle told us about the lives and influence of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mary Seacole, Tom Jenkins and more.
Students learnt about people who have made a real difference in the world. Mr Haji, our PE/Sports teacher, highlighted athletes who helped pave the way for other Black sports men and women. Examples included:
Mr Modasia's talk was about influential figures from the Asian community. He shared the story of Kalpana Chawla - the first Indian born woman to go to space. She died a hero in the Columbia disaster inspiring many to follow their dreams.
We heard from Ms Andrea, who focused on influential people in education. And Mr Brown discussed those who made a difference in the entertainment industry.
Students gave us positive feedback. They enjoyed the assembly and said they had learned new things about Black history.
I'd like to leave you with the following quote from a Horizon Sixth student who found the assembly very moving:
"The assembly was inspirational and had meaning. It showed us the people that had worked hard and made sacrifices to help the new generation of young people. Hearing the speeches from the teachers made me inspired and emotional."
