Communication and Interaction
Many children struggle to communicate and tell us what they want or need.

Forms of communication we often see are:

  • Biting
  • Pinching
  • Scratching
  • Kicking
  • Pulling or pushing objects or people
  • Hair pulling
  • Saying unkind words

These are all normal communication behaviors for many of our children. You may see some of these behaviors with your child at home.

To help our children, we use lots of communication and interaction strategies. These include:

  • Now and next boards
  • Visual timetables
  • PODD communication boards (download example here)
  • Our behaviour rules: be ready, be safe, be kind.

At home you can help by:

  • Cutting your child’s nails short
  • Tying up long hair
  • Having a chewy toy or chewable jewellery
  • Wearing trainers or soft leather shoes

We can give you resources to help at home.
Please ask your child’s class teacher about these at the parent review meetings next week.
