Yes or No? Learning to Make Confident Choices

At Meridian, we focus on helping our learners make and express choices with confidence.

One of the tools we use is our visual ‘Yes’ and ‘No’ cards. Staff wear them like a necklace and use them throughout the day, alongside Makaton signs, to support communication.

These simple tools help every child to have a voice - even if they’re pre-verbal. They encourage independence, build confidence, and support learners in making decisions and expressing preferences.

It’s a practical approach that also helps children set boundaries and build healthy relationships based on mutual respect. The idea of being able to say “yes” or “no” is woven into every lesson helping learners communicate their needs.

We’d love to share more about how we use these tools in school. Please join us at our next Family Dinner Date on Monday 12th May at 6pm, where we’ll be talking about how this approach supports communication and confidence.

Wishing you all a lovely week.
